On March 31st, 1476, 29 days after the Confederates’ victory over Duke Charles the Bold in Grandson, the Bernese placed 1500 men under Adrian von Bubenberg. They perceived it as the most important bastion against the West. Here, before Lausanne, Charles the Bold assembled a new army, equipped for a new battle. With the Burgundy wars, the old Swiss Confederation entered into the era of its big politics. Charles the Bold dreamed of resurrecting his duchy as interim empire for Charles the Great; an empire stretching from the Netherlands to Sicily, in anticipation of a “united Europe”.

This plan was shattered on June 22nd, 1476 by the Confederates in the Battle of Murten. One name is personally connected with this victory: Adrian von Bubenberg. He is the Hero of Murten.

There is a statue of him in Bern in front of the law offices of Steinegger Rechtsanwälte.

What does the Battle of Murten
teach us?

In the shortest time and with a minimal of own casualties, the bulk of a hostile army was crushed. This was a battle of which the course of action and the goal were fixed from the very outset and this plan was implemented in full.

Not overly hasty, the Confederates determined the manner and time of commencement of the offensive. They were fully in control of events from the very start, not leaving their opponents the initiative for a single moment. Convinced of achieving their aim as planned, all side issues and secondary occurrences were subordinated to the ultimate goal; this confident focus on the material task resulted in a resounding success. The battle plan of Murten demonstrated the ability of the Confederate leader to act freely and creatively in accordance with prevailing circumstances.

Courage, know-how, perseverance and the spirit of resistance to the very end established the outward requirements for the final blow. Murten is one of the shiniest examples of active defence. The fortress of Murten did not only serve as protection, but was also the starting point from which to launch own offensives.

Murten and your lawyer

Murten demonstrates what you may also expect from your attorney:

You should achieve your objectives within the shortest time. The planning of goals, the means and the cost is his highest priority; taking care of detail forms the basis of success. Confident focus on the material issues ensures success.

An attorney too, acts freely and creatively according to the circumstances of each individual case. Courage, know-how, perseverance and the spirit of resistance accompany him along the road to success. Offensive action, also within the scope of active defence, is a prerequisite.
